It was supported by more than 15 sponsors from a...
Inundation maps are required for spatial planning. This paper describes the generation of inundation maps for the margins of the upstream region of the Tagus estuary (Portugal). Maps are constructed separately for a major river flood (the February 1979 flood) and an extreme storm surge (the February 1941 cyclone), both with return periods on the order of 100 years. All the relevant forcings are considered in the model simulations, including tides, river flow, wind, atmospheric pressure an...
CONNECT provides a local, high-resolution, coastal monitoring service. It integrates model-based forecasts and observations to provide physical and biogeochemical data on Portuguese estuaries. The service is demonstrated in two use cases, the Tagus estuary and the Mondego estuary.
The overall objective of this deliverable is to present consolidated report on the Public-Private-Civic-Partnership (PPCP) approach in the C2IMPRESS case study areas (CSAs), and to describe the details of the spatial multicriteria decision Analysis (SMCDA) tool for risk mapping with an example study in Portugal CSA. Hence, for the simplicity the report has two sections where section A considers the PPCP study and section B presents the SMCDA tool. It is to be mentioned that this deliverable i...
Vibration-based methods for damage detection have been widely used, particularly those relying on ambient excitations. These methods are based on the principle that changes in a structure's physical properties, such as mass, stiffness, and damping, will lead to changes in its vibration charac-teristics. A promising area of research focuses on utilizing operational loads, such as vehicular traffic, instead of ambient excitations. Dynamic responses gener-ated by operational loads, such as trai...
Coastal revetments are commonly constructed at the land-sea boundary to control shoreline retreat and protect infrastructure from coastal hazards, such as wave overtopping and coastal flooding. An innovative approach to enhance existing rock revetments involves incorporating steps, which can improve coastal amenities by providing seating and viewing areas. However, current empirical wave overtopping formulations do not consider hybrid configurations combining rock and stepped elements. This ...
This paper presents a fundamental study on the evolution of particle breakage during triaxial compression tests, focusing on the effect of total suction. This analysis was based on triaxial compression tests, performed with RH control. The tested material comes from the sta- bilizing shoulders of Montesinho CFRD and three RHs were stud- ied: 50%, 75%, and 100%. Experimental procedures are presented, with details of the prep- aration of specimens, and stress–suction paths are given. Special at...
The ProCoast-3D project aims at the development, application and testing of methodologies for predicting the structural behavior of rubble-mound breakwaters (RMBs), as part of a decision support system for the planning and prioritization of maintenance/repair work developed at LNEC, to increase the safety, functionality, and resilience of RMBs in the face of climate change. The study uses both experimental data (through 3D wave basin simulations) and theoretical models to analyze the progres...
CONNECT provides a local, high-resolution, coastal monitoring service. It integrates model-based forecasts and observations to provide physical and biogeochemical data on Portuguese estuaries. The service is demonstrated in two use cases, the Tagus estuary and the Mondego estuary. Coastal areas provide multiple ecosystem services and are key for the blue economy. These systems harbor ecologically important habitats for fish, shellfish and birds, act as buffers for nutrient and contaminant lo...
This article discusses and presents the methods and results of the digital survey carried out, in 2025, of Paimogo Fort, a military structure built in 1674 in the municipality of Lourinhã. The digital survey aims to safeguard and monitor the conservation state of this classified coastal heritage site. Paimogo Fort underwent a conservation intervention in 2024 to preserve and strengthen the values of its individual and collective memory, transforming it into a meeting point for the memorie...
This document summarises the work carried out by the Lisbon Living Lab within the B-WaterSmart WP2 – Water-smart technologies and concepts. It is the final deliverable of task 2.4 - Lisbon LL solutions, which was closely coordinated with T3.5, focusing on digital tools that implement the methodologies and frameworks developed in T2.4. The document begins by introducing the Lisbon LL and then presents a portfolio of seven solutions designed to address challenges, meet ambitions and accelerate ...
This paper presents an innovative service for river flow forecasting and its demonstration in two dam-controlled rivers in Portugal, Tejo, and Mondego rivers, based on using Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) models to predict and forecast river flow. The main goal is to create and improve AI models that operate as remote services, providing precise and timely river flow predictions for the next 3 days. This paper examines the use of MLP architectures to predict river discharge using comprehens...
In alluvial river reaches, flood events are characterized by the inundation of the adjacent land near the main channel course. In these compound channel or overbank configurations, the flow structure is much more complex than in a single channel due to interactions between faster and deeper flow in the main channel and the slower and shallower flow in the lateral floodplains. Moreover, the interactions may be enhanced by the floodplain roughness as this region is usually covered by vegetation...
River confluences are dynamic zones where hydrodynamic interactions between tributary flows—varying in velocity, direction, and sediment concentration—can significantly alter hydro morphology. These changes feature substantial consequences for the stability of riverbanks, nearby hydraulic structures, and the surrounding environment. This paper investigates flow mechanisms and sediment dynamics in a symmetric 50° confluence through laboratory experiments on a scaled physical model of a real co...
The present benchmark test case aims to simulate and validate the interaction of long-crested waves with a vegetation stem, based on flume experiments conducted for 5 m length artificial vegetation fields exposed to regular waves. A detailed description of the experiments can be found in Reis et al. (2024). The test case focuses on the movement of a flexible vegetation stem (an artificial cylinder) among a submerged vegetation field at a density of 440 cylinders per m2, conducted under wave ...
This study investigates the deterioration of the 20th-century azulejo façades of the Manuel Rocha Building in Lisbon. A multi-technique approach, including SEM-EDS, XRD, GPR, thermography, and hyperspectral imaging, was used to characterise materials and assess decay. Photogrammetry and digital image processing enabled mapping of pathologies and reconstruction of the decay chronology. Results indicate rapid degradation, with some panels reaching a critical state of degradation if no interv...
Radon (Rn) is a radioactive gas that has no color, smell or taste and that can be found in soil as a result of the radioactive decay of naturally present elements such as uranium and radium. Radon can be present as well in building materials and water, but concentrations derived from them are usually lower than those derived from radon from soil. Radon is the greatest natural source of ionizing radiation and exposure of population to high levels of concentration of Rn during prolonged p...
