O RT-SCIE, a...
Abstract The main objective of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties of three thermal-modified wood species when exposed to weathering in urban and maritime/industrial environments and their durability against subterranean termites. The wood species studied were Maritime pine, ash, and blackwood acacia. All wood samples were exposed to two diferent environments (urban and maritime/industrial) for 24 months. Then, its physical and mechanical properties were evaluated (modulus of...
The increasing demand for sustainable and biodegradable materials in the construction industry highlights the importance of developing circular bio-based building materials that align with the principles of circular bio-economy. This study forms part of a broader investigation aimed at developing novel construction materials with suitable thermal and acoustic performance. In this context, the present work focuses on evaluating the biological colonisation susceptibility of several natural orga...
Nowadays, the construction of new buildings and their renovation must consider thermal requirements, safe guarding the thermal comfort conditions during summer and winter. Inevitably, building envelope systems absorb a large part of the incident solar radiation. ETICS (External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems) have emerged to support building energy efficiency in the construction sector. However, the thermal stress induced by heat accumulation in conventional ETICS results in cracks and ...
This paper presents a computer vision system for dimensional quality control of concrete panel formwork. The methodology combines corner detection with photogrammetric principles to analyse overhead images of formwork assemblies, comparing detected geometries with design specifications. Validation on synthetic images demonstrates high accuracy, with mean absolute errors below 1.12 mm for dimensional and 0.02° for orientation measurements. While application to real-world factory conditions rev...
The construction industry increasingly uses prefabrication for the significant advantages in cost-effectiveness, production speed, and environmental sustainability. Achieving high-quality building outcomes demands rigorous quality control of the individual building components. Concrete panel manufacturing presents unique challenges, particularly in surface quality assessment, as the material’s heterogeneity complicates standard evaluation metrics from industries like automotive manufacturing,...
In recent years, the development of new construction materials and the publication of standards associated with new construction processes and evaluations have made it possible to construct buildings with high acoustic comfort. Alongside the construction of buildings with high sound insulation requirements, other aspects, such as structural noise, are becoming more important. This paper presents the evolution of the vibration and structural noise (ground-borne noise) descriptors in environ...
Recent years have been fruitful in the development of computer vision methods for a wide variety of applications. Despite the successful results achieved in the segmentation of cracks on concrete surfaces, poor results are still persisting during onsite application, mainly due to noise caused by biological colonization, which is present in most of historical heritage buildings. The authors have been working on this problematic and developed the SC-Crack method previously, however it still re...
Daylight and solar radiation are essential factors that influence the quality of life of all living beings. In the scope of Naturelab project, the main objectives of the daylight and solar radiation (DSR) evaluations are the assessment of how both daylight and solar radiation can contribute to the health, comfort, and well-being of individuals in outdoor spaces. Additionally, the potential positive effects of those factors are also evaluated as part of therapeutic programs. For this purpose,...
Supor...
Indoor building environments influence people’s comfort and well-being. These concepts are increasingly being studied comprehensively, and various methods exist to assess them, such as post-occupancy evaluations. This study aims to develop a methodology to identify comfort and well-being parameters that, according to the occupants, require improvement and to suggest improvement measures. The research was conducted in ten dwellings in Portugal. Data collection involved a survey applied in w...
Radon (Rn) is the largest natural source of ionizing radiation and exposure to high levels of this gas and its short-lived offspring over prolonged periods can become a public health problem. Radon exists in soils and building materials and can enter buildings by convection through cracks in the envelope or by diffusion through the envelope itself when it is porous, reaching concentrations above the recommended reference levels. The aim of this article is to present the factors that most in...
Hybrid simulation integrates numerical and experimental techniques to analyze structural responses under static and dynamic loads. It physically tests components that are not fully characterized while modeling the rest of the structure numerically. Over the past two decades, hybrid testing platforms have become increasingly modular and versatile. This paper presents the development of a robust hybrid testing software framework at the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC), Port...
Global challenges like urbanisation, climate change, and biodiversity loss require integrated approaches linking water, nature, and society. Research emphasises the need to manage water, ecosystems, and societal well-being as interconnected systems. Nature-based solutions (NBS) provide cost-effective ways to protect and restore ecosystems and are fundamental to addressing urban challenges, promoting both environmental sustainability and human health. The NATURELAB project, implemented in five...
Concrete is the second most used material on Earth after water and its large-scale production generates heavy environmental burdens. Effective mitigation of this stress involves understanding the key factors contributing to it. In this work, a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment was conducted on ready-mixed concrete (RMC) produced in two Portuguese plants. It was found that the extraction and processing of raw materials dominates most environmental impact categories, especially those relatin...
Residual circulation in estuaries plays a crucial role in controlling salt intrusion, material transport, and ecosystem functioning, making its understanding essential for coastal management worldwide. Despite its importance, the mechanisms driving the transverse structure of residual flows remain insufficiently explored, particularly in relation to the fortnightly tidal variability. This study shows how the main driver of residual flow may switch from baroclinic dominance at neap tide to ba...
