Abstract: | The safety evaluation of concrete arch dams requires validated numerical procedures capable of representing the dynamic interaction between the dam and the reservoir during a seismic event. The proposed numerical model employs a discrete element formulation, which is ulti-mately intended to represent the potential dynamic slip of discontinuities in the rock mass foun-dation. The present paper focuses on the dam-water interaction modelling, which is a key com-ponent of the dynamic response of concrete arch dams. A fluid element discretization of the res-ervoir domain was adopted, based on Cundall's mixed discretization technique, which provides a displacement formulation for time domain analysis. Simple validation tests confirmed the ac-curacy of the solution. The model was also applied to a case study involving a recently built arch dam in Northern Portugal. In situ measurements of the dam dynamic response were made by two methods: forced vibration tests, performed before and after filling the reservoir, and a continuous monitoring systems installed in the structure. These measurements provided exten-sive data that allowed the dynamic characterization of the concrete arch structure and the vali-dation of the numerical model. |
