Abstract: | This paper presents an assessment of the bending resistance efficiency offered by steel I-sections under interaction of axial forces and bending moments. This property is related to the largest allowable bending moment about the strong or the weak axis, when the crosssection is subjected to an axial force. The relationships are written in normalised variables and they depend only on two geometrical parameters. The aim of the paper is to compare the relative steel cross-section bending resistance efficiency within several profile series, and to propose some strategies to improve that efficiency, in the elastic and in the plastic ranges of behaviour. The comparison is presented for various kinds of European, American, British and Japanese hot-rolled I-profiles. |
