dc.description.abstract | The capacity of using any material for construction is dependent upon the ability not only to under-stand its behaviour when applied at the construction site but also to assess its performance onsite in different stages of its working life. This capacity enables a reasonable, safe and economical maintenance of existing timber structures within an acceptable level of uncertainty. Onsite assessment even though based on existing documental information, often needs also the use of research outputs (visual grading rules, non-destructive testing methods, models) that should be disseminate properly by the stake-holders involved in the rehabilitation of existing constructions. Also a strong research effort should be addressed to those areas that can answer the frequent questions that still came out during the rehabilitation of a timber structure. These steps are important to overcome the fact that although timber is one of the first materials to be used by man for construction and its mechanical behaviour studied since the seventieth century the capacity of predicting its properties on-site is perceived still as limited, the impact of some factors not still very acquired and the apprehension of the information by construction technical staff limited. | pt_BR |
