Abstract: Moisture is a cause of anomalies and health-related problems in historical constructions. Porous material damage often takes place during evaporative drying processes, especially when soluble salts are present. This lecture is aimed at improving the understanding of these processes. Its main contents are the following: 1 Introduction 2 The two-stage model 3 NMR animation of drying with pure water 4 Drying tests 4.1 - The evaporation curve 4.2 - The drying index 5 Slower drying: causes and effects 6 Influence of soluble salts on drying; NMR animation 7 Influence of paint layers on drying; NMR results 8 Influence of hydrophobic treatments on drying; results
