This communication is based on a work done in LNEC, which consisted in the study of the protection performance of varnishes applied in wood surfaces for exterior exposure. The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of 8 different varnish systems (with and without colorants and light stabilizers) to protect and ornament two kinds of wood, allowing to determine the influence of the wood species in the varnish degradation. The results obtained lead to the selection of the best varnish formulation to the protection of wood for exterior uses. With this study was concluded that the acrylic aqueous varnish is a good alternative to the traditional kinds of varnishes.pt_BR
